| Note* | He Abraham was the youngest of three brothers who came over on the"Concord," the trip taking 75 days. All descendents of the 13 families who came over on the "Concord" are entitled to become members of the"Concord Society" which carries a lot of weight around Philadelphia. In 1688 he was one of four signers of the anti-slavery petition*. In 1689 he was one of eleven men to whom Penn granted a charter to Germantown. He served as burgess in 1692. It is said he was the most skilled weaver of linen cloth; he won a governer's prize for the first and finest piece of linen. Abraham Op den Graeff arrived in America 13 Oct 1683, with his brothers and sister, Herman, Dirck, and Margaretha. On 11 Jun 1683 the brothers bought 2000 acres in PA, a part of which was around Germantown, and the remaining along the Perkiomen. Abraham signed in 1688 the protest against slavery. He was a Burgess of Germantown, and a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly. He was immortalized by Whittier in his poem "The Pennsylvania Pilgrim." He was the only one of the family to return to the Mennonite faith. He is also the only brother to have children. [Sources: News-Caster V 5 #4 pg 82; Krefeld Immig V 4 #1 pg15; DeHaven-Ward-Luke and related families, by Luke; History of the Opden Graeff/Updegraff Family by June Lutz] * The First Public Protest Against Slavery in North America, Germantown, Pennsylvania 1688 Historic Marker in Germantown: "Nearly300 years ago, four men joined to write a strong statement against human injustice. They lived in Germantown, now a part of Philadelphia, having come to Pennsylvania only a few years before from their homeland, Germany. All were members of the religious group called the Society of Friends, or Quakers. And on April 28, 1688 they gathered to address the issue of slavery. Francis Daniel Pastorius, the founder of Germantown in 1683, wrote for the group: 'There is a saying that we shall do to all men like as we will be done ourselves; making no difference of what generation, descent or color they are'. According to Pastorius, Garret Hendricks, Derick up den Graeff, and Abraham up den Graeff, slavery contradicted the Golden Rule. White men did not want to be slaves. Therefore white men had no right to enslave black African men and women. In Pennsylvania, Pastorius continued, people had 'liberty of conscience' or the right to practice any religion they wished. The privilege did not exist in much of Europe and, in fact, was the reasonwhy so many people left the Old World for William Penn's new colony. Why then, Pastorius asked, would these same people who had suffered oppression oppress those 'who are of a black color?' "By all standard measures, the Germantown protest failed. Quakers continued to practice slavery in Pennsylvania, as did increasing numbers of non-Quakers. The Germantown protest itself disappeared forover 150 years. It was rediscovered in 1844, a time when the debate over slavery was particularly heated." | Note | He Abraham Op den Graef, about 1650-1731 Abraham Isaacs Op den Graef was born in Germany to Mennonite parents, probably between 1649 and 1651, the youngest of four children. He came from a region on the lower Rhine where the German and Dutch cultures mingled. His grandfather, Herman Op Den Graef, was a well-known Mennonite preacher and bishop in Crefeld (also spelled Krefeld), Germany. Abraham married Tryntje Katarina Jansen on July 23, 1679 in the Crefeld Reformed Church in Crefeld, Germany, before he came to America. On October 6, 1683, Abraham and Tryntje arrived in America on the English schooner Concord after a 75-day journey. They were among a group of 33 people in thirteen Mennonite or Quaker families from Crefeld, Germany. These thirteen families, referred to as the "Original 13" were the founders of Germantown, Pennsylvania, the first sizable, stable, and distinctly German settlement in America. Arriving with Abraham were his older brothers Derick and Hermann, his sister Margrit, and his widowed mother Grietjen, who died a month after their arrival. While in Germany, these families had made strong ties with the Quakers, in particular with William Penn and Francis Daniel Pastorius, who were recruiting settlers for Penn's "Holy Experiment" in the New World. These were people in religious groups outside the mainstream who were looking for escape from religious persecution, the freedom to settle where they could live simple God-fearing lives, and worship as they pleased. Abraham's father and his siblings converted to Quakerism from the Mennonite faith. Abraham and his two brothers jointly purchased 2,000 acres of land in Germantown from William Penn's agents in Rotterdam prior to their arrival. The first winter in Germantown, the new settlers dug cellars into the ground and covered them for shelter. Although it was a hard winter, the settlers survived, with the exception of Abraham's mother. They soon built houses of logs, then later of local stone. They raised flax, built looms, and set up spinning wheels. Some of the settlers were accustomed to growing vines and when they saw wild grapes growing, they established vineyards. The settlers worked hard and used their skills in the trades of weaving, tailoring, carpentry, and shoemaking. The Germantown Fair, started in 1701, became a center for exhibiting and selling the products of these craftsmen. Abraham and Tryntje had the following five children, all believed to have been born in America: * Gierten OpdenGraef, about 1683-1770, married Richard Adams, 9 children * Isaac OpdenGraef, ? -1745, married Mary Basilher, 1 child * Jacob OpdenGraef, about 1687-1750, married Anneke DeHaven, 6 children * Margaret OpdenGraef, about 1692-1755, married Thomas Howe * Annica (Ann) OpdenGraef, about 1693-1771, married Herman (Harmon) DeHaven, 10 children The OpdenGraef brothers (Derrick, Hermann, and Abraham) were weavers of linen. Gabriel Thomas, in Province and County of Pennsylvania, published in 1698, says the brothers made "very fine German linen, such as no Person of quality need be ashamed to wear." Abraham, the youngest of the brothers, was considered the finest weaver of the three. It has been claimed that Abraham was the subject of the John Greenleaf Whittier poem "The Pennsylvania Pilgrim," written almost 200 years later, in 1872. Stanzas 67 and 68 read: "Or, talking of old home scenes, Op Den Graaf Teased the low back-log with his shodden staff, Till the red embers broke into a laugh And dance of flame, as if they fain would cheer The rugged face, half tender, half austere, Touched with the pathos of a homesick tear!" Abraham held many positions of importance in Germantown. He served as town burgess in 1692 and was a member of the Provincial Assembly of Pennsylvania in 1689, 1690, and 1691. He was one of the original committeemen and was very involved in local affairs. In 1688, Abraham was one of four men (Francis Daniel Pastorius and Abraham's brother Derick were two of the others) to sign a resolution in opposition to slavery, which they presented to the Germantown Quakers. This was noteworthy because it was the first protest against slavery made by a religious body. The resolution included the question "Have not these Negroes as much right to fight for their freedom as you have to keep them as slaves?" In 1692, there was a disagreement among the Quakers over the doctrine of inner light. "Inner light" was the belief that every person had within himself a test of truth on which he could rely, without the binding character of church authority. Abraham took one side and his brother Derick took the other, which led to the brothers parting ways. Abraham eventually converted back to his Mennonite roots. Unfortunately, over the years, there seems to have been a decline in respect held for Abraham by other settlers in Germantown. His personality seems to have been difficult, and his last years were marked by trouble. He appeared increasingly in court procedures in Germantown, mostly for personal infringements of the law. He was cited and fined for neglecting his fences, for the misdeeds of his children, for letting his hogs run loose, and for verbally abusing people in his community. He was sued for not paying debts he owed to others and was convicted of abusing the bailiff in an open court proceeding. He sued a neighbor for slander when the neighbor declared that "no honest man would be in Abraham's company." Abraham lost the case. A quote from an OpdenGraef Ancestry page: "DeHaven descents of Abraham OpdenGraef ... [believe] that the emotional intensity, obstinacy, and tendency to alcoholism found throughout the entire DeHaven family group came from the OpdenGraefs, as these are notoriously characteristic traits of that family group." Two of Abraham's children married two of Evert Indenhofen's (DeHaven) children and had a total of 16 children. In 1704 Abraham and Trintje sold their brick house in Germantown and moved to Van Bebber's Township, a new Mennonite settlement in the Perkiomen/Skippack region of Philadelphia. Abraham purchased a tract of land there in 1709. Details of Abraham's life in this area are scarce. He died there in 1731 and was buried in the old Mennonite burial ground at Skippack. Deeds show that in 1731 his land was divided between his sons Isaac and Jacob, his daughter Margaret and her husband Thomas Howe, and his daughter Ann and her husband Herman In de Hofen (DeHaven). | |

| Religion* | He was Mennonite He was a Bishop in the Mennonite Church who signed the Dortrecht Confession of Faith in 1632. | |
| Occupation* | He was A Linen Weaver and Merchant. | |
| Note* | He Herman op den Graef was born on 26 November 1585 in Aldekir (Allekirk), County of Muir, Germany near the border of Holland and died on 27 December 1642 at Krefeld, Germany. He was married in Krefeld on 8 June or August ( it is believed August) in 1605 to Greitgen Pletjes who was born on 26 November 1588 in Kempen, Hollandor possibly Germany. She was the daughter of Driessen (born c1550 and died on 27 December 1645) and Alet Göbels Pletjes (who died on 7 January 1640). Many believe that this Herman could have been a son of Abraham Graeff, but it has never been proven. Herman was a linenweaver and merchant, born of Mennonite parents of Aldekirk about 12 miles from Krefeld. Herman and his wife moved to Krefeld in 1605 (or1609?). During the Conference of Leading Mennonites in Dordrecht in 1632, he and another delegate from Krefeld signed the 18 Articles of their religious faith and he served as preacher in the congregation at Krefeld. In 1637, when contributions were requested for the oppressed Reformed Church in Sweebrucke, Herman contributed (from his own means) in the name of the small Krefeld congregation 25 Reich Thanker, while the Reformed Congregation in Krefeld contributed only 22 Reich Thanker. Among the oldest Mennonites of Krefeld, the op den Graeff family is one of the best known, since Herman op den Graeff was the first preacher of the Mennonite community who is known by name. Two glass paintings have been preserved from the Krefeld house of Herman op den Graeff, which had been in the Kaiser-Wilhelm Museum from 1894. The "Crefelder Zeitung" (a newspaper of that time) dated August 20, 1894, No. 421, describes these paintings, particularly the texts that were on the glass paintings at that time. Another reference about the glass paintings with a description of the Coat of Arms was found in the estate of W Niepoth (op den Graeff folder) in the archives of the city of Krefeld, who noted a letter dated November 17, 1935 from Richard Wolfferts to Dr Risler: "Saw the Coat of Arms glass pane in the old museum: 'Herman op den Graeff und Grietgen syn housfrau' or the like. Coat of Arms - In the sign a silver swan in blue. Helmet decoration (I think): Swan growing." At a third point, Nieper mentions the two glass paintings, which were in the local historical museum of the Linn Castle at the time his book was published in 1940. They were apparently transferred to the Linn Castle when it was furnished from the Kaiser-Wilhelm museum. It was Nieper who finally published the texts on the glass paintings. It is thought that most of those spelling their names currently asUpdegraff, Updegraph, Updegrove, Uptegraff, Uptegraph, Uptegrave,Updegrove, Upthegrove, etc are all probably descended from this Hermanand Greitjen. The physical and mental characteristics of these personsseem to be persistent. They seem to be tall and spare in physique andhave strongly marked features. Some say that the family is French-German, but the name sounds more like Dutch. A hand Bible that was printed in Amsterdam in 1633 was located in Newberrytown, PA by Clyde Updegraff Shank, who did a lot of research. He placed the Bible in the York Co, PA Historical Society on 21 August 1957. The Bible was at one time in the possession of Peter Updegraff, son of Isaac. It was before 1609 (when the armistice between the Netherlands and Spain took place) when the Mennonite family op den Graef left Kempen and Aldekerk (Lower Rhine) and settled at Krefeld (about 12 miles away from Aldekerk), where they were tolerated under the reign of Prince Moritz of Orange. Krefeld was a small town of handicraftmen. DeGraeff was formerly the Von GROBER/GROBEN family. this family today shows the same coat-of-arms as the DeGraeff's. Herman was a dealer in linens. [Krefeld Imm V 4 #1 p 10; Op Den Graeff, v 1 LKS film 1036920#3; Pennsylvania Folk Life V3 #8] There is new evidence (but not proven) that Herman op den GRAFF(1585-1642), the celebrated Bishop of Krefeld Mennonites and a Signer of the Dordrecht Confession of 1632, was a morganatic (or natural son) of John William de la MARCH (1562-1609), the Graff von Alten (Count of Altena). This particular John William de la March is listed as the younger son and heir of William V of Cleves (1516-1592) and Mary of Habsburg (1530-1584), who was the Princess Imperial, Princess of the Romans and Duchess of Cleves, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand I of Habsburg (1503-1564), niece of Charles V of Habsburg (1500-1558), the Holy Roman Emperor who presided over the sufferings of the Reformation. William V of Cleves parents were John Cleves III (1490-1539) and Mary of Julich-Berg (1491-1543). The morganatic mother of Herman has been TENTATIVELY identified as Anna van ALDEKERK (Dutch) or Anne de ALDEKERK (French) or Anna Cloister of Aldekerk, perhaps a former nun. | Note | He Is the mystery of the Op Den Graff windows all serendipity? Did our Bishop Hermen and his wife, Grietje attend Krefeld Market one day and find two or more window frames for their townhouse? The frames just happened to have hints of the Hebrew Cabala and signs of the Mysteries of the Rosary on them. Nevertheless, Hermen and Grietje decided such fancy work would be good advertising for the linen business and cloth industry. Their Pletjes family niece, Margaret Jasper had married a Van Der Schuren and migrated to Ireland to escape the ridiculous Religious wars over church real estate and to invest in or inherit her own real estate; and her crazy son from her second marriage (William Penn, one of the largest real estate investors in history) had not yet been born to sit down, as if in front of the second window, to write or pen a pamphlet, entitled: "No Cross, No Crown." So, after all this recitation, we are still confronted by a haunting mystery displayed on a beautiful set of stained glass windows dated 1630 AD: One Hermen Op Den Graff, one Blessed Mother of Christ, one missing family seal, one family motto, two extant windows, two different Lohengrin Swan Seals, three shields of a multiple Dukedom, three rectangular insets, four family seals, five centuries of Mennonite-Anabaptist Witness, twenty mystical circles of frame decoration, twenty centuries of Apostolic Interrogation: Who shall separate us from the love of God? Readers of this Thesis are encouraged to discuss it with Glen Wayne Miller. Commentary, documentation and even logical speculation are welcome. You may write to: GW Miller, 136 West Price Street, Philadelphia, PA 19144 or Kevin L. Sholder, 414 Blackstone Dr., Centerville, OH 45459-4111. |
