NoteHe Ichabod was 16 years old, and Martha was 14 when they married. In 1854, they and their five children born at the time moved from Jones County to Quitman County in a covered wagon. (Martha's parents also settled in Quitman County.) Here, they lived in a log home and had five more children. Near the end of the Civil War, Ichabod, then 49, joined the CSA as a Private. He and his 16 year old son, Alexander, left Martha with 7 children, all little girls, except for the baby, Ichabod. It is hard to imagine the hardships that they and so many other families had to endure during those turbulent years - running a farm, keeping a family together and clothed and fed. While the older boys were away fighting, Ichabod and Alexander were helping to put up fortifications
at Savannah as Sherman and his three armies totaling about 100,000 men were stating their infmous march from Atlanta to Savannah. Sherman arrived on December 10, and within two weeks after fierce fighting, he was able
"to present the city to Lincoln as a Christmas gift" - an extremely expensive gift with a high toll of dead and wounded. With Alexander at his side, Ichabod was wounded in the hand and groin by a minnie ball. He died of his injuries on December 29, 1864, and is buried in that section of Laurel Grove North Cemetery set aside for Confederate soldiers on Lot #949, Grave 13. Two of the seven children died while their fathers and brothers were away fighting.1

1807. On December 26, 1809, he purchased 250 acres in Johnston County from Joseph Sasser of Wayne Co., N.C. They apparently lived here until he sold the land in 1811. The census indicates that the first four children were born in North Carolina, the last being Bryant, who was born in 1815.
Ichabod III, the fifth child, was born July 17, 1816, in Georgia according
to the 1850 and 1860 censuses, so the family must have made the move to
Georgia in late 1815 or early 1816. Ichabod II and his wife, Nancy, lived
in the Mountain Springs neighborhood, and were active members of Mountain
Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Jones County. They "went into the
constitution of the church...holding their first conference June 2, 1838",
according to "The History of Jones County, Georgia, 1807-1907", by Carolyn White Williams. Ichabod and Nancy were the parents of six children.1

"The Murphys in North Carolina have been known for two hundred years for their contributions to political, religious, and social life in this colony and state. The name was originally McMurchie, but was changed to Murphy after Gaelic was suppressed. They originally came from the Island of Arran, on the west coast of Scotland and they belonged to the ancient race of Celts who refused to be Romanized or Anglicized. They later migrated to Center United Methodist Church Cemetery, Ozark, Dale County, Alabama, USA, Buried alongside B. M. Balkcom and Adrianna (Deal) Balkcom.6,2 
(Witness) HistoryHe witnessed In around 1835, 28 year old James E. Balkcom, the earliest identified Balkcom-named ancestor of the Alabama and Oklahoma Balkcom families, married a 20 year old girl named Mary who was maybe a family neighbor.James and Marywere most likely at the time living near their birth places in Duplin or Sampson County in eastern North Carolina, with James probably working as a farm hand.Mary's family name can't be proven, but a good guess is that she was a daughter of one of the several Murphy families in the counties, some of whom lived very near to the Balkcom families.The 1978 Balkcom book guesses that Mary's parents were Daniel and Elizabeth Murphy, who from 1840 through 1860 lived as neighbors to James and Mary Balkcom when they moved to Georgia and later to Alabama. Other researchers have accepted Murphy as Mary's family name, but no proof has been found.
If it is true that Mary's parents were among the Murphy families who were in Duplin County, North Carolina around 1800 then she may be a second or third generation descendant of immigrants to North Carolina from Ireland in the early 1700's.The Murphy emigration excerpt on the left is a perspective on one of these families.The surname list links to the database of all researched names, including many Murphys who lived in the Duplin/Sampson County area between 1780 and 1830.
By 1837, no more than a year or so after their marriage, James and Mary had moved 400 miles south to Lowndes County in south central Georgia, bordering the Florida line.The 1840 Lowndes County Census shows that they had five children under age 5 in the household, two boys and three girls. In around 1845 they made another big move, this time to Dale County, Alabama where they were to settle permanently. In 1847 Mary had a son Brantley, the seventh of her children who survived to adulthood, and the ancestor of the Balkcom's who moved to Oklahoma in around 1900.
James and Mary had a large family, and Mary at age 46 had 11 children in her household (although some were of adult age) along with husband James.If census information is accurate, Mary had her youngest child (Joanna) in 1864, which would have made Mary age 50.It may be that this child was adopted, but the federal census clearly labels her as daughter of James.In 1870 she had seven in her household plus husband James.By 1880 at age 66, she still had two adult daughters and a boy, probably a grandson, in the household.Mary died in 1886, at the age of 72.

Todd Johnson at Johnston County Heritage Society says that all able bodied men were required to work on roads and rivers, and they would work the area where they lived. Two Balcombs being listed together probably means they lived in the same household or adjacent to each other.
